Mr Scougall came to Lindisfarne in January 1956 from Glasgow Academy, an independent day school for 1,200 boys. He was a keen sportsman, took an active part in amateur theatricals and during the war he was solely responsible for the recruitment, organisation, administration and discipline of the academy wartime working camps. He married Mrs Elizabeth Hernaman (matron at Lindisfarne) in 1958 in the Anglican Church, Waipawa.

Mr Scougall believed that the greatest single factor for a successful school was “the cultivation of a spirit of friendship and trust between master and pupil. Its cultivation depends first and foremost on example. If a boy sees that his master really believes in what he says, in the classroom, on the field and above all, in everyday life, if he sees the master putting his precepts into practice, the boy will come in time to trust and believe in him.”

Mr and Mrs Scougall left Lindisfarne at the end of Term 1 1958 to return England. Later they retired to New Zealand and Mr Scougall’s funeral was held at Lindisfarne College on 12 June 1975. Mrs Scougall attended the 25th Jubilee of the college before passing away on 5 March 1995 aged 83 years.
