Assembly Notes (Winter Sports Colours) 22.09.23

Kia ora, School. Please be seated.

I’d like to invite Jack Blyth to deliver today’s reading

Today’s reading comes from Joshua, Chapter 1, Verse 7

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

This is the word of the Lord (Thanks be to God)

Rectors speaks

Thank you, Jack. Today is a Sports Colours Assembly to recognise those students who have excelled in their winter codes. Achieving colours at Lindisfarne College is a great honour, and it acknowledges the huge commitment that these young men have made to their sports.

Colours not only recognises high achievement in each code. Certainly, each of the young men being presented with their Colours today is an elite athlete, but part of the requirement is that the student has also excelled in other areas. In training, by turning up on time, every time. He must also demonstrate a positive attitude towards practice and play.

I’ve enjoyed watching lots of you play your sports this year. We are not the largest school in the region, but we box well above our weight and achieve excellent results every year. So well done to all of you, whether you are receiving colours today or not. Many of those boys receiving colours would acknowledge that their individual success has been enhanced by the tough competition and support provided by their team mates.

It's also a chance to thank our coaches at the end of the winter season for the massive commitment they have made to you all. It’s one of the hallmarks of Lindisfarne College that all teachers take a sports team and I know you all appreciate the many hours that they have given to supporting you in your sports this year. And of course Mr Peterson and Miss Akeripa also spend countless hours organising and administering sport each and every day, so we must feel grateful to all our staff, for all they give in the sporting cornerstone. Please put your hands together for our staff.

Whilst sports colours is our main Assembly item today, I’m delighted to begin by acknowledging outstanding achievement in our Academic Cornerstone for 6 young men.

Many of our Year 12 & 13 students are starting to really wind up now for this year’s NZ Scholarship exams. These are NZ’s most challenging exams for secondary school students, beyond NCEA Level 3, and today I wish to present NZ Scholarship badges to the Yr 13 students who passed Scholarship exams as Yr 12s last year.

Could the following boys please come forward:

Tom Van der Gulik - Scholarship in Economics

Karanvir Sohal - Scholarship in Accounting

Leo Guo - Scholarships in Chemistry and Accounting

William Duncan - Scholarships in English, Biology and Statistics

We had entries in Mountain Biking, Sailing and Swimming and all boys competed well.

CANOE POLO
Our Canoe Polo team played in their D grade final last Thursday, the team had beaten Napier Boys High School team during the season so knew the game could go either way. Our team put up some shots but the ball deflected off the goal and dint go in but the boys kept applying pressure.  Unfortunately, Napier took the win, and we placed second. After the game the boys were commended by the Napier Coach on how well they represented our college, their parents and themselves during the term.  Always being polite and playing the game within the rules and with excellent sportsmanship.  This is fantastic to hear.
