Good afternoon School. Please be seated. I’d like to welcome College Council chair Mrs Sharon Wards to this afternoon’s assembly.
I’d like to invite Oliver Newton to deliver today’s reading.
Today’s reading comes from 1 Peter Chapter 2, Verses 17-19
Honour everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the Emperor.
Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows, while suffering unjustly.
This is the word of the Lord
Thank you, Oliver.
Rectors Comments:
Today is a very special Sports Colours Assembly to recognise those students who have excelled in their summer codes. Achieving colours at Lindisfarne College is a great honour, and it acknowledges the huge commitment that these young men have made to their sports.
Colours not only recognises high achievement in each code. Certainly each of the young men being presented with their Colours today is an elite athlete, but part of the requirement is that the student has also excelled in other areas. In training, by turning up on time, every time. He must demonstrate a positive attitude towards practice and play and the award recognises fair play towards oppositions players and officials.
I’ve enjoyed watching many of you play your sports this year. I am very competitive and love to see you win, as I did two nights ago watching the Hockey 1st XI beat Havelock HS, but more importantly I feel proud when your conduct reflects the Lindisfarne character flags – win lose or draw. The 1st XI Hockey team, supported by Mr Howlett, certainly understand that. I saw a number of referees decisions go against us but I didn’t once see a player challenging a referee or being disrespectful toward the opposition. But we don’t always get that right in our weekly sports fixtures. The heat of the moment and the desperation to win, can affect our judgment. Last term, Mr Kidd organised students in Durham house to read out the Poem If by Rudyard Kipling. One line in the poem says “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.” Are you that player who keeps his head and trusts the plan and maintains focus in order to get through the difficult times? Or are you that player who is prone to losing his head and blaming his mates, the ref, the opposition players? I know which player I’d want in my team.
And I hope that those of you who are playing in more social teams are upholding the value of respect for the game, for the officials who are helping to make it happen and for the coaches, managers and family members who are on the sidelines supporting both teams. When you play in a more social grade, where the stakes may not be so high, please don’t think for one moment that the expectations on you to uphold the Lindisfarne Sporting Code of Conduct are any different than for highly competitive teams. When you wear that crest on your chest boys, you are making a commitment to being a good Lindisfarne man and representing the school with pride and honour. Oliver’s reading earlier spoke of a brotherhood. Zac Maulder your head boy has also spoken you to you about that notion of Lindisfarne boys being brothers in arms. Thank you to each and everyone of you who continues to support the Lindisfarne Brotherhood to be strong. In and outside the classroom. On and off the sports field.
Today marks the end of Week 4 and we are getting close to the midway point of the term. Some of you will require haircuts in mid term break and so don’t wait for a tutor teacher, dean, a member of Senior Leadership or your parents to remind you. Take responsibility and sort yourself out please gentlemen as you’re all more than capable of doing that. This term’s theme is all about courage, so continue to have the courage do the right thing and not the easy thing.
Today is a day of celebration for sporting colours and we can start that celebration by singing as one with genuine pride, passion and indeed courage. I really enjoyed hearing those of you who were at St Andrew’s chapel on Sunday morning singing so well. I know Reverend McDonald was very proud of you. Whenever Mrs Wards visits she always asks me how the singing’s going because like me she loves hearing you in full voice. Naturally I said you were amazing and getting better all the time. Please join with me in singing the School Song Highways in the Heart.
HYMN
Thank you, please be seated.
We have a large number of sportsmen to present to you today and I’m going to ask College Council Chair Mrs Sharon Wards to come forward to present the Colours awards.
