Lindisfarne Competes at 2021 New Zealand Canoe Sprint Championships

Last weekend four Lindisfarne College students headed off to the 2021  New Zealand Canoe Sprint Championships at Lake Karapiro and enjoyed great success.

Oscar Jarvis was crowned ‘New Zealand’s fastest U14 paddler’ as he edged to the front in an exhilarating U14 men’s K1 200m final to provide a rousing climax to the final day of action for the junior boys. That title went with two silver and two bronze medals in his K2 and K4 events.

Mat McKendry was outstanding and proved equally adept in crew boats as K1s, winning 3 national gold medals in all the U14 K2 races along with silver medals in the K1 and K4 500 races. The U14 men’s K2 200m provided some hotly contested racing with Matt and his partner proving too strong for Oscar and his partner.

Year 8 Beck Allen had a successful weekend, winning silver and bronze medals alongside Oscar in the Hawke’s Bay Kayak Racing clubs K2 in the 200m and 500m distances. It was a great effort for a younger boy racing with paddlers that were bigger than him.

Daniel Brown had a strong showing in the very competitive U18 age group. In the blue ribbon K1 1000, Daniel continued to show why he is the top NZ U18 distance paddler. He backed up his recent National U18 Ocean ski and kayak marathon titles and New Zealand team selections with a silver medal and he supported this with another silver in the 200m distance. In one of the most exciting races of the weekend, Daniel alongside old Boy Hamish Macky, nearly pipped the Arawa Club favourites on the line of the K2 200m, missing out on the gold medal by 13 hundredths of a second. Daniel rounded his weekend off with an outstanding effort in the Open Men’s K1 500 B final and another silver medal in the K2 1000.

The Junior boys now take a break before the winter 10k series, while Daniel and Hamish head back to Karapiro for Junior World Kayak Sprint Championships Trials next week.
