Assembly Notes 06.04.23

I’d like to invite Cuthbert House Prefect Tom Baines forward to deliver today’s reading.
Today’s reading comes from Luke Chapter 23 Verses 44 – 47

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” This is the word of the Lord (Thanks be to God)

Rectors Comments:
Thank you, Tom. Today is the day we acknowledge our Summer Sports Colours for 2022. Director of Sports Mr Petersen will explain to your what sports colours are all about, so I’ll leave that to him, but I just want to congratulate the Colours recipients for all the time and effort they’ve put into their various sports.

Colours is the outcome, the reward that we see and hear about today, but the many hours of practice, training and play that has taken place, play a big part in earning colours, so well done to you all, and I look forward to seeing who we recognise later in the year for cultural colours, winter sport colours and Yr 13 Academic colours.

As I mentioned on Monday, Open Day was a big success and so thank you all once again. The word on the street is that amazing things are happening at this College and I am proud of the fact that we are the No 1 school of choice for boys in the Hawke’s Bay. That’s down to you boys and our incredible staff and the parents and friends who support us too, so thank you for the successful term we’ve all shared together. It’s so exciting to be part of a school that’s committed to growth and improvement and where every one of us wants to be the best that we can be, because that’s what makes us a great school and not just a good school.

In some ways it felt like we had to do a reset on our start to the year after Cyclone Gabrielle, but I was really impressed with the way you got back into your routines once we all returned to College life. I just want to acknowledge those families who are still dealing with the aftermath of the Cyclone - whilst many of us have returned to a sense of normality and are looking forward to rest and recreation in the upcoming holidays, we must remember that there are many who are still working hard to recover businesses and homes.

Tomorrow is the start of your school holidays, but it’s also Good Friday the start of our Easter weekend and day when we mourn the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. So it’s a day for you to reflect on the Christian cornerstone and the powerful part it plays in your life. If you don’t think the Christian cornerstone plays a big part in your life, then think about the fact that you attend about 400 chapels if you start at Lindisfarne in Yr 9 and 550 if you start in Year 7. That’s a lot of sermons and lots of opportunities to relate the stories we hear about in our bible readings to your own lives.

And then we have Easter Sunday and that is a day of celebration as we celebrate the resurrection and of course if we luck to enough to receive or discover an Easter Egg on Sunday, the egg is a symbol of new life and it gives us that sense of hope and optimism for all the good things that will come in our lives.

Let’s not forget that Anzac Day is on Tuesday 25 April, two days before our first day back at school. It’s the day when we New Zealanders and Australians who fought alongside each other in WWI, honour those who have given their lives for their country. You may be attending a dawn service with your parents or other families on that day. I’ll be joined by William our Head Prefect and other members of the Prefect team at the dawn service in Hastings, as we lay a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of you all. Another day for you to reflect on all the things that you can feel grateful for in your lives. Your family, your friends, those you love and care about.

I look forward to seeing many of our boarders return on the Wednesday evening before school starts back and then everyone else returns for our first full day of school on Thursday 27th April. So we start with a very short week.

Have a fantastic break and make sure you have fun and at the same time stay safe. We want you all back safe and sound ready for a really busy Term two. It’s going to be packed with winter sports, the College production, house events, the Senior Ball and I don’t have to remind you that junior exams and a whole lot of externals are going to packed in there too. So yes it’s going to full on.

I look forward to acknowledging our Colours recipient along with some academic and sports award winners too, and the reason we’re facing this way for our final assembly of the day, is because we have a special musical performance too. First, please join with me as we start to practice for our amazing House Singing Competition in term 2, as we now sing our our National Anthem, God Defend New Zealand.

Sports Report from Mr Petersen

Summer Sports Colours are awarded to our athletes/sportsmen who have reached high levels of success either individually or in a team environment. The criteria for these awards is based on excellence of performance in the school premiere teams or in an individual sport where regional honours have led to national level competition. Those receiving these awards must always act as a role model to others and have an unselfish dedication and commitment to their sport while being part of the leadership group alongside the coaching staff. It is one of the highest and prestigious awards that can be awarded in sport while at school.

Cricket
Congratulations to the 2nd Xl cricket team for finishing runner up in the Division 2 Mens grade. Although they went close at the weekend NBHS proved too strong batting second and secured the victory. This has been another excellent season for the 2nd Xl team and a big thank you to Mr Peter Kane who has coached them this term. His coaching and dedication has certainly helped secure a number of wins for the team this year.

In the final match of the season for the 1st Xl against HBHS in a 2 day game it came down to the very final ball of the innings with Lindisfarne requiring a wicket to secure victory. Finn Reid after two days play was the man of the moment claiming the wicket and securing a fantastic win for the 1st Xl. There was a number of outstanding performances during the game with Jack Blyth scoring 33 runs but Oscar McDonalds 54 runs in the first innings and 41n not out in the second innings along with taking 6 wickets for 21 runs in the second innings was certainly a man of the match performance.

Futsal

Presented with their NISS Futsal Championship medals and Trophy

Our senior team who recently won the Hawkes Bay Secondary Schools Championship headed to Tauranga for the North Island Championships. Playing in a pool of 8 and having to finish top 2 to make the final, our team went through pool play unbeaten topping the pool. This leaving them with the challenge of beating Papamoa College to win the championship outright. A quick start saw the team lead 2 nil after 5 minutes. The game settled and flowed back and forth in a tense final. Eventually we gained further dominance and won the final 6 nil. Although this appears a comfortable win it was far from it with Ben Graney having to make some huge saves throughout the game, Tom Speers defending some critical attacking moves, while Harry Huxford, Rene O’Sullivan and Alex Davies all scoring 2 goals a piece. The entire squad had a fantastic week, all contributing to a final worthy of being crowned North Island Champions.

Would Julian Schmith, Will Foster, Tom Cassidy and Carter Lachmund come up first to receive their medal and remain on stage.
