On the eve of the Olympic Games starting the NZSS Swimming champs were taking place in Auckland. In what is becoming an increasingly large event with over 500 swimmers competing, the Lindisfarne team of three acquitted themselves extremely well as they always do. Whilst there were no medals there were many fine performances in extremely tough competition. Jake Stephens continues to be the best performing swimmer at this level with a number of top 10 places and 4 personal best performances. In the 200m individual medley, Jake improved his PB by over 7 seconds, finishing 9th overall in the race. His 50m backstroke was also equally satisfying with a 6th place finish and his 100m backstroke with a 5th placings was also very pleasing. Jake greatly improved his rankings from prior to these championships in a number of events.
Marcus Sisam also recorded 4 personal best performances and improved his rankings from prior to this competition immeasurably. This was especially so in his 50m butterfly in which he improved from an initial ranking of 23rd to 16th overall in the age group.
Marshall had the unenviable task of competing in the 17-18 year old age group, a highly competitive group with swimmers who hold many national records. He will be very happy with his two PB’s, which included a 14th overall placing in the 50m freestyle.
