House Music 2021

Our House Music Competition took place last Friday on the last day of Term 2. The event began with the Rock Band section where Aidan House gained first place with a highly polished performance of Glass House by Kaleo. The solo section was taken out by pianists Quinn Le Lievre (Durham) who performed Fazil Say’s Paganini Jazz Variation, in which he created great musical clarity and strong musicianship.

All the instrumental ensembles showed a depth of musicianship with groups delivering convincing performances. Oswald was victorious in this section playing a medley of Doxy and Blue Monk. The Ensemble Choirs section offered some great moments of house spirit and musicianship, and it is often here that we learn of boys that have great voices that have been previously unknown. Cuthbert house, expertly led by Finley Duncan, sang the Jewish folk song Hashivenu, and showed how much preparation must have gone into learning the song. Cuthbert took first place and were rewarded for their challenging choice of song.

Aidan House’s passion and volume performing Queen’s We Will Rock You appeared to impress the judges the most in the Full House Choir section, gaining them first place. The walk-on-walk-off award was also won by Aidan, who frantically took to the stage at great speed and energy at the beginning of their full-house choir song, which ultimately matched their vocal performance.

Thank you to the adjudicators, Mrs Helen Walker QSM and Arahi Whaanga, to the House leaders, sound and tech team, stage team, Mr Selfe, Mr Howlett, and Dr Kristensen for all bringing together what was a great event.
