Our reading today comes from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, verse 16."

'Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.'

Thank you, Jasper.

This verse reminds us that the way we live, our attitudes, our actions, and how we treat others, is visible. It shapes how people experience us individually, and how they experience our college as a whole.

In many ways, this is what school culture is. It is not something written on a wall or decided by a few people. It is built day by day, through how we support one another, how we represent the college to those outside of it, and how we choose to act regardless of the situation.

Each of us contributes to the culture of this school, and each of us plays a part in determining what that culture looks like.

This afternoon, Frank and Beck are going to speak to you about this idea of school culture, what it means, how we can bring it to life, and the role each of us has in shaping it.

Please listen carefully and take the opportunity to reflect on the kind of culture you are helping to create here each day.

Thank you both for your effort and commitment in preparing that, and for the leadership you continue to show in helping to build a positive and supportive culture here at our college.

Cultural Report

Rockquest Final at Toitoi

Last Saturday evening Lindisfarne College Rock Band Miscellania competed in the HB District Final of the Smokefree Rockquest that featured the top eight rock bands from around the Hawke's Bay. Miscellania performed the two songs that we heard last Friday. The adjudicators commented on the bands strong vocals and how the band performed as a tight ensemble. Miscellania didn't place in the top three bands but can be very proud of their achievements. Congratulations Miscellania.

House Music Update

Well done to everyone thus far in your preparation for house music, which is coming up on the last day of this term. This is a reminder to keep working hard at learning your lyrics for your full house song as well as getting groups such as rock bands, instrumental groups, and solos organized so that your house can perform the best it can. If you have any questions, please see Mr Kristensen or Mr Selfe.

Churchill Oratory Speech Competition

In week four of Term 3 we will be holding the Churchill Oratory Speech Competition, so now is a good time to start thinking about how you could enter this College competition. To enter the competition, you need to prepare one speech; this could be informative, persuasive, or entertaining speech and it should last about 3 to 4 minutes. The junior section is for years 7-10, while the senior section is for students in years 11 – 13. See Mr Kristensen if you have any questions.

Poetry Competition

In the lead up to National Poetry Day on 28th August, year 12 and 13 students are invited to enter the National Schools Poetry Competition. All you need to do is write one original poem. It can be in any form at all and about absolutely anything, and this is a great way to express ideas that you want to get down on paper. If you are interested in entering the poetry competition, please see Mr Kristensen at the end of this assembly.

Sports Report

In Shooting

Round 3 of the CLNISS series took place at the Wairarapa Clay-Target grounds on the weekend. In Single Rise, Duncan Logan shot 20/20 and then finished second after a shoot-off. In Points Score, Jacob Mathers shot 57/60 to secure a fine win. In Single Barrel Josh Snijders and Gus Denton shot 18/20 before competing in a shoot-off with Josh securing first place and Gus, third.

The highlight of the day for Lindisfarne was Jacob Mathers, who tied on 89/100 for the highest overall score before winning in the shoot-off which also won him the prestigious Sam and Angus Donald Memorial Trophy. In the team's event Lindisfarne A finished first and Lindisfarne B finished second ahead of PNBHS.

In TAG

Congratulations to Ardie J Smith who has been selected to represent the New Zealand TAG BLACKS at the ITF TAG WORLD CUP to be held in Australia in October. Ardie J has also been named as the Captain of the team – a wonderful achievement!

In Surf Lifesaving

At the recent Surf Lifesaving Hawkes Bay Awards evening, Flynn Dobson was awarded the top U12 Male Hawkes Bay Junior Sportsman, outstanding Junior Sportsmanship and Metropolitan Life Cups.

Well done on another great season!

In Rugby

The 3rd XV is to be commended on their run thus far! With a 57-12 victory over Karamu High School, they continued their unbeaten run.

Doug Laing, the Hawke's Bay today reporter penned an article in the newspaper on Thursday that referenced the performance of our 1st XV against Feilding on Saturday. He highlighted the fact that it was our first win over Feilding since 2021 and furthermore, reminded readers that Feilding just recently returned from Japan where they were runners-up in Sanix School's tournament making the performance and the result even more significant.

The boys showed tremendous courage in coming back from 10-0 down to lead 24-20 at halftime and then never relinquish the lead again to secure a 48-46 win.

Congratulations to all concerned, coaching staff and players on an outstanding effort.

In Football

Congratulations to our 1st XI boys who secured qualification for Nationals with a hard fought 3-2 win over Hastings Boys' High School. A spirited performance from Hastings Boys made it difficult for our boys but Gavin Derr managed to score for the third time in the game to ensure victory! Well done boys! The Junior team played some good football and took an early 3-0 lead against HNHS Junior As. The final score was 3-2 and with that result, the boys secured their first win over HNHS in the last five attempts.

Congratulations to all those who have been acknowledged this afternoon. Your efforts, commitment, and example set the tone for what we value as a college community.

As we leave today, I encourage each of you to take hold of the opportunity you have — every day — to shape our school culture. A culture built not just on words, but on actions; one marked by brotherhood, respect, and kindness.
