Top Ranked Boys’ School in New Zealand

For the past five years the international company Crimson Education has produced a ranking system of New Zealand schools, indicating their ability to prepare students to gain admission to top ranked universities. While it should be acknowledged that there are many other indices which demonstrate the success of a school, this ranking system, based primarily on a school’s academic results, is a significant indicator of achievement. The 2023 rankings show that Lindisfarne College has risen significantly in the 2023 list, from 28th to 11th position and is the highest ranked boys’ only school in the country.

This improvement is a reflection on the superb efforts the boys and teachers have generated in academic endeavour across all levels of the College. The ongoing improvements that have occurred in the Scholarship results over the last few years, coupled with consistently high NCEA outcomes together explain the key reasons for this elevated position. The region is superbly represented with Woodford placed 9th and Lindisfarne 11th. Other Hawke’s Bay schools which feature in the top 50 are Iona College and Napier Girls’ High School.

The College is delighted with this year’s result, with Ross Barry Assistant Rector adding “Lindisfarne Scholarship lessons typically take place in the early mornings, lunch hours and in after school hours and this speaks volumes for the determination and commitment of those fellows who are genuinely seeking that higher level of academic understanding and outcome.”

Despite navigating three very difficult Covid years, the College has continued to make significant headway, and this is reflected in this improved ranking.  The excellent results achieved at the end of 2021 have been consolidated in 2022, placing the College on a very firm footing academically.

Rector Stuart Hakeney congratulated boys and staff and added, “I’m delighted that our College has been recognised as one of the top achieving schools in the country. We have a strong and proud history of academic achievement going back some 70 years. It is a cornerstone of Lindisfarne and every boy who enters our gates knows that to give his very best is the minimum requirement. To achieve 70 NZ Scholarships over the past two years is testimony to the sheer hard work and determination of our students and staff.”
